Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What styles of dance will we be learning at the summer intensive?

The focus is on contemporary and modern dance and dancers will learn from experts in the field in classes such as technique, ballet, pointe, repertoire, commercial contemporary, modern dance (such as Graham, Limon, Horton), improvisation, choreography/composition, contact improvisation & floorwork, for example.  We also toss in a few other fun things in there each day such as: jazz funk, jazz, lyrical, stylized jazz, conditioning & stretch, floor work, injury prevention, urban, text-based dance.

Do I have to register for the full week?

Ideally, yes. However, under some circumstances, we will accept a registration for less than the full week. Please email us to discuss.

Can I attend for just a half day?

We can make this work in some circumstances. Please email to make arrangements and to inquire about schedules.

Who is teaching?

Natalka Lewis, Graham McKelvie, Ainsley Sudds, Jenna Powell, Deanne Walsh, Katharina Schier, Misha Behnia, Megan Koch, Kate Hanson, Kim Ilott, Maryn Bjorndahl, Serena Sandford

What do I wear?

Ballet: Any color leotard & tights (no extra "junk" though please) & ballet slippers

All other styles: Any suitable dancewear

Boys: Form fitting dancewear for ballet (tights and t-shirt), and any suitable dancewear for all other genres.

*You can change out of your ballet clothes after ballet class. There is a short transition time between classes to change if you need to. We recommend choosing something you can wear all day as a base and then add/take away items as needed. We are not strict about attire; just wear something we can see you move in and not baggy!

Is there a time for parents to watch?

Friday afternoon will be our "show" in Studio 1 and the dancers will show you some of the things they have learned over the week

What to bring?

AN OPEN MIND AND YOUR BEST EFFORT! Snacks, water, theraband, yoga mat, extra clothes, a notepad and pen, socks, dance shoes, a lunch (we ask that you bring a lunch.  Students must have written permission to leave the building at lunch).

Should I come early to warm up, or is there a warm-up included?

You may come 10-15 mins early. Coming to do your own warm-ups is always a good idea. We will use our first class as a warm up and we will make sure you are safely and properly warmed up.

When is the latest I can register?

We will accept registrations up until July 29th, 2019 (provided there is still space in the intensive) for a full week. Drop in's can register any day of the intensive.

Can I drop-in for a day or class?

Yes! The drop-in rate for a single class is $22+GST. Join us for a full day (or a couple days) for $100+Gst/day.

*Please note that we have subsidized the cost of the single class drop-in's in order to make the classes available to all; particularly those who might not be able to afford the full intensive/day and so that they can try out the opportunity. The single class drop-in rates can only be applied to a maximum of TWO classes per day. If you are planning to attend for more than two classes, or a full day, you will be charged the half-or full day rate.

Where can I find the schedule?

It will be posted here SOON! It will also be posted on Social Media! Follow us on Instagram & Facebook!

Is Trip the Light a Dance School?

No; we are a professional project-based company for professional dancers ages 18+. We have a division of our company that holds workshops/training for aspiring professionals ages 9-18. We are an extracurricular company opportunity for dancers in the Calgary area. We are not a competitive dance school or training facility. We foster friendships and professional ties for dancers who dance at a variety of dance schools. The Contemporary Summer Dance Intensive is not affiliated with any dance studio and is open to all dancers from any studio.
